Combines superb storytelling with state-of-the-art animation.. Gag by gag -- and there's a stream -- it's merrily irreverent, visually and vocally. The bigger picture, though, is rather more conventional.. The script, instead of being what we tolerate in order to savor the visuals, is a delight all by itself.. This is beautiful work.. In an era when much on film seems old, Shrek seems new and fresh and clever.. What the film lacks is the faintest glimmer of charm.. The movie is helped immensely ...
